Strawberry Butterfly Cake for beginners

Strawberry Butterfly Cake for Beginners

This is my very first cake back in 2009. I made a Srawberry Butterfly Cake. It was so much fun for a complete beginner that I was, and I was so excited to make it for my family. I felt like I created a work of art.

As my skills have changed and developed, I will never forget this first cake as it truly gave me the confidence I needed to start me on my baking journey, and helped me grow my home bakery.

I am sharing this recipe to teach beginners how to make a simple butterfly cake to impress your guests for any event. It is super simple and works perfectly for Easter, Bridal Shower, Mothers Day, Baby Shower or a Birthday!

This is so much fun for kids to start making a decorated cake, and they will love learning how to decorate cakes.
I have found that decorating cakes has brought so much joy and stress relief to my life in many ways. So let’s begin.

  • ▢ 1-3 tablespoons milk or as needed for desired consistency
  • Preheat oven to 350°. Prepare two 8 inch round baking pans by adding some cooking or baking spray, and lining the bottoms with parchment paper. Spray the top of paper as well.Set aside.
  • In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine cake mix, sugar, flour, and gelatin.Add water, melted butter and eggs.Beat on low speed 30 seconds. Beat on medium 2 minutes. Fold in the chopped strawberries. Transfer to the prepared baking pans.
  • Bake in oven until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, about 25-30 minutes. Let them cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks; remove parchment paper and let cool completely.Wrap one cake in plastic wrap, and then foil and place in freezer, as we will be using only one cake.

Set aside.Once cake is cooled completely, cut cake in half.Place the two halves close together on a large cake board, with the flat/straight cut side facing outward and the curved sides facing each other, close together.

Spread frosting all over the cake.Using a piping bag with a large 1M tip, make the body of the butterfly by piping a spiral line connecting the two halves of the cake to look like a butterfly body.
Using desired colored piping gels, pipe lines from top to bottom of the top of the butterfly cake.Take a toothpick, and gently drag the toothpick through the icing to pull the gel into the design as shown. For the border edge of cake, using a piping bag with a small 105 tip, make small circles all along the edge.Place a dot of colored piping gel in each circle, or alternating colors.
Place two floral stamens on the body of the butterfly to create the antennae.
