DIY Outdoor Grill Area Update

Spring clean up, has got me making some DIY improvements on my backyard journey. If you might remember, back in the day, when I posted how I revamped my plain backyard with a gazebo tent and temporary flooring because I am a long time renter. Well we are back at it again with our DIY Outdoor Grill Area Update.

DIY Outdoor Grill Area Update

When we moved in, our backyard was filled with gravel areas; and while it is easy maintenance, I wanted to create an outdoor space that we could use, and remove when it’s time to buy a home in the future.
I didn’t want to spend too much money on outdoor flooring such as pouring concrete or something permanent, as the landlord may not approve, so we decided to use the same method that we used the first time to create the outdoor gazebo flooring.

Gazebo flooring using Backer Boards as a base.

This time for our DIY Outdoor Grill Area Update, we decided to remove the gravel from the grill area, and place in temporarily in another spot that actually needed it, and we left the the black plastic ground covering that was underneath the gravel. We cleared a 10 x 10 space that was under our pop up stripped tent.

Backer Boards make all the difference!

We then used our trusty Backer Boards, that we got from The Home Depot. These Backer Boards, (I call them Backey Boards) are a cement board, that are generally used to be placed behind tiles in the bathroom and they resist water and mold, so placing them for outdoor use seemed like a no brainer.

We got 6 boards that measure 3×5 each. They are priced at about $10 per board. And we had them delivered, so that was a big help.
The Backer Boards that we previously used for our gazebo, has held up very well for over 7 years now, and since this flooring will be covered by a pop up tent all the time, this flooring shouldn’t get too wet in the rain.

For our new grill area, we then placed the Backer Boards as level and close to each other, to create at space of about 9×10 by the time they were all placed together. We then taped them together with some strong Duct Tape, so they wouldn’t shift too much.
We then covered the Backer board flooring with an outdoor area rug, that is actually called a camping mat. It is actually made of plastic, that you can just sweep up, or spray off with a hose. They are reversible, and come in so many cool designs. I chose black and white, because that’s the theme of my outdoor space.

We nailed down the corners of the mat with outdoor nails that are used to secure pop up tents. Then we took a step back to admire our work. We are so happy with our new grill area flooring, because it looks so good with our Blackstone Griddle, and Treager Smoker.
We have been using this area non-stop ever since. Maybe later on we may think about placing snap together outdoor deck tiles on top of the Backer Boards, the same as we did in our previous DIY gazebo flooring.
But for this DIY Outdoor Grill Area Update, we are ready to grill and chill.

Here’s a list of what you will need for this weekend project.=

Shovel

Garden nails

Patio mat outdoor rug

6 3×5 or 3 3×10 water resistant Backer Boards

I hope you found this DIY Outdoor Grill Area Update, inspirational for your outdoor space, to create something easy, temporary, and affordable.

Happy grilling this summer folks!
