Football Sugar Cookies with Bingo Printable

There are two things that are always happening at our house during football season. Food, and fun! While watching the game, my family loves to have a treat. This is ultimate Homegating, so it has to be something delicious, and sweet. This time around, I wanted to make some sugar cookies, as I have been trying to incorporate them in my custom cake business, so trying out great sugar cookie recipes, has been on my list. So with the football game season, finally here again, I wanted to create a sugar cookie, with  Skittles®.

I love Skittles, and they are great to decorate cookies with, so that is why I came up with these Football Sugar Cookies decorated with Skittles. And to make the game watching even more fun, I have made up some Football Bingo Cards, where the whole family can play Bingo, using Skittles as the game pieces! But we will get to more of that in a minute. For now, I want to show you how to make these delicious, and fun to make Football Sugar Cookies.

I got everything I needed to make these delicious cookies, at my local Vons Store, and while I was there, I picked up a few bags of Skittles®, to decorate the cookies with, and to use as Football Bingo game pieces!  Also be sure to keep an eye open for the special “Call an Eatible”  display If available at your Vons grocery store.

Before I start baking, I like to have all of my ingredients, laid out, so I know what each step is, and that way, I won’t get frazzled looking for something I need. So be sure to measure out, and have all of your yummy ingredients ready.

I mix the dry ingredients in a bowl first, and then all of my wet ingredients separately. Blend the softened butter, sugar, vanilla and egg in the bowl of an electric mixer, for about 2 minutes or until creamy. Add in the flour mixture slowly, and mix on low to combine. When everything is mixed thoroughly, wrap cookie dough on a piece of plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. This will give it time to firm up enough to roll out.

Roll out the dough on a floured flat surface, like a large cutting board, covered with a piece of parchment paper, and cut each cookie into football a shape using a cookie cutter, or just as pairing knife like I did here. Then gently place on a cookie sheet, lined with parchment paper.

Bake them for just about 8-10 minutes until golden on the edges. Remove from oven, let them cool a bit, then set on wire rack, to cool completely.

While they are cooling, prepare your icing my mixing together your powdered sugar, and milk, in a small bowl. add in your desired food coloring, if desired, and mix well. I wanted my football icing brown, so I added a bit of brown icing to most of the batch. I removed a few tablespoons of icing while it was white, so that I can use it to pipe on the lacing of the football, using a reusable bag sniped at the tip, and I then inserted a piping tip into the bag, along with the white icing, and set aside. Use a bit of plastic wrap to cover the tip, so it doesn’t leak out, or dry up.

To spread the brown colored icing on the cooled sugar cookies, I just used an offset spatula, or you can use a spoon, or just a butter knife as well. Use what you feel comfortable with. While the brown icing is still tacky on the football shaped sugar cookies, place the Skittles along the edges. Then transfer to a wire rack to harden, and set. After they are set, and the brown icing is hardened, use your white icing to pipe on a line in the center, and a few more lines to create laces.

Let them harden up a bit again, which shouldn’t take longer but 5-10 minutes then serve during your favorite NFL game time!
