Until my teens, the place that I spent most of my time, was in the Big Apple! New York city was home, and I knew my way around the city pretty well. My sister and I walked everywhere, and took the train a lot. Wherever we walked, there was sure to be a Hot Dog Push Cart nearby, and the smell of the hot dogs, and onion sauce, would call you in for a bite! It truly was one of my daily meals as a kid! So today, I am taking a walk into my past, and sharing a recipe for that memorable NY Style Push Cart Hot Dog Onion Sauce!

I am sure that there are lots of ways to make this sauce, but my way includes a few tablespoons of butter. It gives it that silky smooth texture and flavor, that is hard to miss! New York City is famous for their Hot Dogs, and This NY Style Push Cart Hot Dog Onion Sauce, or sauerkraut are my ultimate favorite toppings! It takes me right back to my childhood, of walking around the city in the summer, and stopping at a push cart to get a dog!

My sister and I used to walk everywhere. Up to Bloomingdale’s, where the entrance always had the smell of fragrance, to FAO Schwartz to look at all the unique, expensive toys, to then Central Park, to check out the zoo! Whenever we got hungry, the cheapest and easiest thing to eat was a Hot Dog from a push cart, and it was always the best!

This sauce is famous in New York, and you can find it at almost any Hot Dog Stand. The flavor, just enhances the experience, and hot dog so much more that just a regular topping. I start off by mixing my ingredients for the sauce in a measuring cup, then I cook the onions in a bit of butter. While they are cooking, I start to warm up the sauce with some more butter, and once the onions are golden, i simmer it together until thickened. Super simple, and yet, at your cookout or BBQ, this simple hot dog sauce will impress your friends!
